On December 19, 1917, the first NHL games were played. The brand new league began when the National Hockey Association of Canada Limited (NHA) was suspended and only consisted of 4 teams – “The First Four.” The league consisted of Montréal Canadiens, Montréal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators and Quebec Bulldogs. The Bulldogs decided not to operate during the first season and the Toronto Arenas were admitted into the league.. Both Montréal teams were the victors on opening night; the Canadiens won over the Senators 7-4 and the Wanderers defeated the Arenas 10-9.
