On This Day In History

On December 18, 1932, the first NFL playoff game was played indoors in Chicago Stadium, the home of the city’s NHL team. The Chicago Bears defeated the Portsmouth Spartans 9-0.

The protocol back then was of the 8 teams, the team with the best record was crowned the champion, but when these two teams finished the season in a tie, the Bears and Spartans agreed to play a winner-takes-all playoff game to determine the league champ.

The game was supposed to be played at Wrigley field, but a blizzard, waist-deep snow and wind chill below zero prompted the move to the indoor stadium, which wasn’t a regulation football sized field. To accommodate the correct yardage, when a team crossed midfield, the ball was moved back 20 yards to compensate regulation yardage.
