On November 18, 1883, the first time zones were created. The four continental time zones were assembled between America and Canada to end confusion of dealing with over 144 local times in North America. Problems stemmed from passengers and freight being transported over thousands of miles of railways. The time zones eliminated scheduling and collision issues.
