On This Day In History

On September 5, 1836, Sam Houston is elected as president of Texas. After Houston led a successful military rebellion in the Texas Revolution from 1834-1836, the Republic of Texas won its independence from Mexico. Houston served as the president of the Republic of Texas from 1836-1838, then again from 1841-1844.  Houston also was instrumental in Texas becoming a state in 1845.
