On August 29, 2005, deemed as one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history, Hurricane Katrina made landfall near New Orleans, Louisiana. The floodwalls and levees failed, causing widespread flooding up to rooftops of many homes and small buildings. Tens of thousands of citizens were forced to shelter in the Superdome and Convention Center. More than 1,800 deaths and about $150 billion in damages were reported.
