On This Day In History

On August 8, 1974, President Richard M. Nixon announced on a televised address that he would be the first president in history to resign. Nixon was feeling the pressure from impeachment proceedings against him for his involvement in the Watergate scandal. In his Oval Office address he said, “By taking this action, I hope that I will have hastened the start of the process of healing which is so desperately needed in America.”
