On This Day In History

On August 7, 1782, General George Washington created the “Badge of Military Merit,” known today as the “Purple Heart.” The original badge was created to recognize heroic acts by Washington’s troops and given to soldiers who displayed “not only instances of unusual gallantry in battle, but also extraordinary fidelity and essential service in any way.”  The Purple Heart is typically awarded to service members who have been wounded or killed in the line of duty.
