On August 6, 1945, the U.S. bomber Enola Gay dropped the first atomic bomb during wartime on Hiroshima, Japan. The five-ton bomb initially killed 80,000 people and tens of thousands more in the months following due to radiation poisoning and other wounds.
Another atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki three days later killing an additional 40,000 people. This ultimately led to the surrender of Japan and marked the end of World War II.
