On August 3rd, 1492, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sets sail from the Spanish port of Palos, in command of ships - the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.
The purpose of his journey was to find a western sea route to China, India and the fabled gold and spice Islands of Asia.
Columbus would lead a total of four expeditions to the Americas. He would discover various Caribbean islands, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Central and South American mainland.
