On This Day in History

On April 18, 1906, San Francisco, California was struck with an earthquake, nearly 8.0 on the Richter scale. At 5:13 a.m., the earthquake struck the city, killing about 3,000 people, toppled almost 30,000 buildings and had several raging fires which took days to get under control.

Over 80% of the city was destroyed.

The earthquake was caused by a slip of the San Andreas Fault over 275 miles long. Shock waves were felt from Los Angeles to southern Oregon.

This quake is currently known as the “Great San Francisco Earthquake,” and was the deadliest quake in U.S. history.
