On This Day In History

On July 23, 1984, Vanessa Williams, 21, gave up her Miss America title after Penthouse magazine announced they were planning on publishing nude photos of her. Williams was the first black woman to win the title and crown and also the first winner to resign in the pageant’s history. First runner-up, Suzette Charles, also an African American, assumed the title for the remainder of William’s reign.
