On This Day In History

July 20th, 1881...

On July 20th, 1881, Hunkpapa Teton Sioux leader Sitting Bull surrendered to the U.S. Army.  The surrender promised amnesty for him and his followers.

Five years earlier, Sitting Bull would lead the 1876 Sioux uprising at Little Bighorn resulting in the death of Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer and 264 of his men.  After the victory, and being pursued by the U.S. Army, Sitting Bull and his followers would escape to Canada.
