On This Day in History

On April 4, 1968, just after 6 p.m., civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated while standing on the balcony outside his second-story room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. King was only 39 years old when the bullet struck him in his jaw and severed his spinal cord.

On April 4, 1973, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center officially opened in New York City. At that time, the Twin Towers surpassed the Empire State Building as the world’s tallest building at 110 stories. Construction began below street level in 1966, and then began street level building in 1968.

On April 4, 1974, Hank Aaron tied Babe Ruth’s all time home run record.  It was Opening Day and Aaron smashed the first pitch he saw. Four days later, on April 8, Aaron then broke Ruth’s record. Aaron held the record with a career total of 755 home runs, until 2007 when Barry Bonds broke that record. Some believe Bonds record breaker is illegitimate due to his use of performance-enhancing drugs.
