US Attorney Martin Estrada announced federal charges against Shohei Ohtani's former translator, Ippei Mizuhara.
Mizuhara is being charged with bank fraud and accused of lying to a financial institution to steal money and impersonating Ohtani to convince a bank to approve wire transfers.
Ohtani's agent, Nez Balelo asked Mizuhara about the account in question several times and was lied to.
Text messages show Mizuhara admitting to a bookmaker that he was stealing the money from Ohtani.
Mizuhara made bets from accounts he set up using Ohtani's money between 2021-2024. Any winnings he would move to his own account.
Estrada said...
"At this point, Mr. Ohtani is considered a victim in this case."
"Mr. Ohtani has cooperated fully and completely in this investigation."
Mizuhara could face a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison.
