Official Cause of Death of Missouri College Student in Nashville

According to the medical examiner’s office, the Missouri college student who first went missing on March 8 in Nashville died of accidental drowning and alcohol poisoning.

The body of twenty-two year-old Riley Strain, was found in the Cumberland River on March 22, two weeks after being kicked out of a bar in downtown Nashville. With the release of the autopsy, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) can confirm with the original findings of their missing person detectives, that Strain’s death was as accidental, and is officially classified as such.

The autopsy report listed Strain’s blood alcohol level at 0.228 and the cannabis compound Delta-9 THC was also found in his system. Detectives originally concluded that Strain was impaired on the night he went walking in the dark, on unfamiliar terrain, fell down the steep embankment, which led to the river, and landed in the water where the current pulled him in.

Authorities said in a statement, “The MNPD continues to extend its heartfelt condolences to Riley Strain’s family and friends.”
