Mayor Eric Adams announced that New York City is ending the controversial debit card program it started about 8 months ago for migrant families. Asylum seeking migrants staying at hotels funded by the city without kitchen access were given up to $350 preloaded MasterCards for essentials including food and baby supplies.
The debit card program cost the city over $3 million for 2,600 families.
Mayor Adams said the program would continue until the end of the year and once it ends, they will return to the boxed meals they formally provided for migrants.
