Non-Citizens Able to Arrest Citizens in D.C.

Non-citizen green cardholders will soon be able to carry badges, guns and have authorization to arrest U.S. American citizens in Washington D.C. The city’s Police Department in our nation’s capital continues to have difficulty with retaining and recruiting police officers. The DC MPD will offer new hires, which could include non-citizen green cardholders, up to a $25,000 signing bonus to join the force.

Interim Chief of Police of the D.C. MPD (Metropolitan Police Department), Ashan Benedict said, “As an agency, we truly believe that a workforce that represents our community brings a variety of ideas, experiences, and perspectives.” Benedict, whose parents are immigrants from Sri Lankan, stated, “Together, this blend drives innovation and growth. This step marks a significant milestone in our journey, as we look forward to welcoming a more diverse pool of applicants.” D.C.’s police force has about 3,400 officers in it’s unit.
