The National Hockey League (NHL) has set new guidelines for their jerseys and equipment. Confirmed to The Associated Press by Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, a memo was sent to all 32 clubs that they are excluding any and all on-ice uniform and/or gear used in warm-ups and official team practices from having any theme night celebrations. Theme nights range from Pride, Hockey Fights Cancer, or military appreciation celebration nights. This also includes the use of rainbow-colored tape on hockey sticks.
This decision came in June after a handful of players opted out of the Pride night last season. The league felt the players choosing to opt out of participating in Pride night was a distraction to the work its teams were doing in the community.
Commissioner Gary Bettman said, “That’s just become sort of a distraction from really the essence of what the purpose of these nights are.” Bettman wants all individuals to be respected for their choices and has said, “We’re keeping the focus on the game.” It is believed that players can and should voluntarily participate in themed celebrations off the ice.
