NFL Season Opener an Upset for the Chiefs

The first game of the NFL 2023 season kicked off last night with reigning champions, the Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Detroit Lions in the GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

What was supposed to be a night of celebration for the defending Super Bowl Champs ended in an upset when the Detroit Lions ended their 5 game opening day skid.

The Lions came into Kansas City roaring with a 21-20-comeback win over last year’s super bowl winners. The first touchdown of the 2023 season was a third-down, 9-yard reception by Amon-Ra St. Brown from Jared Goff. Goff ended the night 22 of 35 with 253 yards and the St. Brown touchdown. The Lions had a pick six off the hands of Chiefs receiver Kadarius Toney and a rushing touchdown by David Montgomery. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was 21 of 39 with 226 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also had six rushes for 45 yards. The Chiefs kicker, Harrison Butker was 2 for 2 on field goals and extra points.

The Chiefs are hoping superstar Travis Kelce will return next week in Jacksonville from an injury. Chiefs are also hoping to get a deal done with their defensive star Chris Jones, who sat last night.

The Lions will host the Seattle Seahawks next week in Detroit.
