The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the ongoing mpox; also know as monkeypox, outbreak in Africa a global health emergency. WHO said a deadlier strain of the virus has reached 4 previously unaffected provinces on the continent. There have been more than 17,000 cases and over 500 deaths in 13 African countries.
The outbreak poses a risk to other countries and may require a coordinated international response.
