New Draft Proposals for Men and Women

Congress is considering proposals to legislation that could change the Selective Service System, aka, the draft.

One proposal would automatically register men ages 18 and include ages through 25. The House Armed Services Committee passed the changes to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) but the Senate Armed Services Committee hasn’t considered the proposal yet, and the top Republican on the Senate Committee strongly opposes the changes.

Another proposal would require women to register for the draft along with men. The Senate Armed Forces Committee has already passed their version of the NDAA extending eligibility to women. This proposal has not yet made it to the full Senate and not the full House.
