National Parks Turn 107

Today marks the 107th “Birthday” of our National Parks System. The National Parks Service was created on August 25, 1916. President Woodrow Wilson had signed legislation that created the National Park Service on that day. Theodore Roosevelt had started using his authority to protect wildlife and public lands in 1901.

It was originally created to “preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.” There are more than 400 national parks that have been preserved over the last 107 years.

National Parks authorities are encouraging everyone to help celebrate the birthday by visiting a National Park or following them on social media. Officials are also running a promotion this month asking everyone to share their “park story” by posting to # YourParkStory to social media. Either by sharing a special memory, what the parks mean to them, any special connection to, or any meaningful ties anyone may have to the parks.
