Nassau County Bans Transgender Athletes in Female Sports

Bruce Blakeman, Nassau County Executive signed an executive order yesterday banning transgender athletes from competing in female sports at county facilities.

Blakeman has immediately gotten backlash for the order saying it is unnecessary, discriminatory, illegal, divisive, and hurtful to at-risk kids.

Nassau County, on Long Island, New York has over 100 county facilities and Blakeman says that “biological males” have an “unfair advantage” over females.

“This is not precluding anybody from participating in sports. What it is, it’s identifying that there are women and girls who spend a tremendous amount of time and effort to excel and compete in their sports. It is an unfair advantage.”

Male athletes are able to compete in male or coed teams, but not teams designated for females only. Sports leagues must now submit documentation of a players’ biological sex at birth.

This order goes against the local and National Sports Association guidelines, but Blakeman says it is “necessary, and it is imperative to maintain fairness for women and for girls.”
