For 26 years, Wayne Gretzky held the NHL’s goal scoring record; that is until Sunday when Alex Ovechkin broke the record scoring his 895th goal.
Ovechkin tied Gretzky’s record on Friday night when he scored 2 goals reaching 894. Ovechkin did have an opportunity to break the record Friday with an empty-net goal, but he didn’t want to make history in that way.
Sunday’s game came to a halt for a brief ceremony on the ice congratulating Ovechkin with Gretzky in attendance, hugging him.
Ovechkin said following the game, “I’m probably going to need a couple of days, weeks to realize what does it mean to be number one…I’m very proud for myself, I’m proud for my family, for all my teammates that helped me to reach that milestone.”
Gretzky said in a statement, “It was my honor to hold the National Hockey League goals record for the last three decades. I now am delighted to pass that honor to a man who truly was born to put the puck in the net and who has played our game with remarkable passion and power.”
“They say records are made to be broken, but I’m not sure who’s going to get more goals than that,” Gretzky also said.
