A gang of Venezuelan migrants have been riding around NYC on a moped, robbing cell phones and wallets. One incident caught on video can be seen where they are dragging a woman along a sidewalk. Police say they have committed at least 62 similar attacks.
The gang is also said to have hired a hacker to breach banking apps. NYPD’s Chief of Detectives, Joseph Kenny said the gangs were able to hack into the stolen cell phones and gained access to victims Zelle, Venmo and other money transferring accounts to make purchases, withdraw cash or transfer money to other accounts. After clearing out victims accounts, the phones were sent overseas to be sold.
Law Enforcement believes the “ring leader” is Victor Parra, 30-year-old migrant from Venezuela, and is still at large.
It is believed 14 members of this gang have already been identified and 7 have already been arrested.
