More than 120,000 micro-schools are currently in operation with over 1.5 million students. They operate as a tuition based/private school, but varying states offer tuition-free options by becoming a vendor of qualifying private school choice programs, by partnering with state agencies/departments, and partnerships with charter schools. Adult mentors or teachers usually support micro-schools, having a small group based students meeting in person, collaborating on projects and activities and by setting daily goals for the each individual. They are often described as a “outsourced homeschooling” or “learning pods.” What sets the micro-schools apart from traditional schools is there are no standardized tests or mandatory curriculum.
Believe it or not, these schools have been around since 2010, but in the past decade, they have become more popular and are targeted to meet each student’s individual needs and are in specialized learning environments instead of the broad span, traditionally uniformed curriculum. Students typically don’t meet 5 days a week; class size is generally less than 15 students, and they can vary in age. Parents love the flexibility and “tailor fit” curriculum their children are getting. Other benefits parents appreciate are the strong emphasis on character development, no homework, self-management and independence and a nurturing environment for their children.
