Mexico Elects First Woman President

Claudia Sheinbaum makes history when she was elected as Mexico’s first female President. Sheinbaum was the former Mayor of Mexico City.

Sheinbaum will be in office for six years beginning on October 1. Sheinbaum is also the first Jewish person that will lead the country, which is overwhelmingly consisting of Catholics.

This election was also the first time there were two females running as the main opponents.

Current President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador was Sheinbaum’s political mentor and said, “…I congratulated her. I am very happy because imagine what it means to hand over the presidency to a woman after 200 years of only men ruling Mexico.” López Obrador also said, “She (Sheinbaum) is the one empowered to make all the decisions. I am not going to influence anything.”

López Obrador also stated, “Let it be heard loud and clear: after I finish my term in office, I will retire, and I will never again participate in any public or political act.”

Sheinbaum said in a speech in Mexico City that she would preserve the legacy of her predecessor and mentor.
