The outbreak of measles has risen to over 100 cases in Texas and New Mexico. Reports have 90 cases in Texas, primarily affecting 77 children and teens with about 85 of the cases being unvaccinated patients and 9 reported cases are in New Mexico.
Georgia and New Jersey have reported 3 cases; New York City has 2 cases; Alaska, California and Rhode Island reported 1 case.
Measles is one of the most contagious infectious diseases known to humans and symptoms include cough, eye irritation, fever, rash and bumps on skin and runny nose.
Risks of developing a degenerative brain and a nervous system disease called subacute sclerosing panecephalitis (SSPE) could affect survivors. Measles can also cause complications in pregnant women and young children including hearing loss, pneumonia, neurological impairment and even death.
Health officials are recommending the unvaccinated to do so. New Mexico is even offering free vaccines for a limited time.
