Measles Cases on the Rise

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the first three months of 2024, cases of the measles have already surpassed the total from 2023.

The CDC confirmed there have been 64 cases of measles reported in 17 states, including Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York (City), Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington. There were a total of 58 cases reported in 2023.

On March 18, the CDC issued a health advisory, warning people to get vaccinated, if they haven’t already. Children and international travelers without the vaccine are at a higher risk and take up most of the reported cases.

The CDC’s health advisory also said, “Measles (rubeola) is highly contagious; one person infected with measles can infect 9 out of 10 unvaccinated individuals with whom they come in close contact.”

Measles is an airborne virus and usually starts with a fever, cough, runny nose and pink eye. After 2-4 days, a rash starts. The CDC said the incubation period for measles from exposure to fever is typically about 10 days, while rash onset will begin to be visible around 14 days after initial exposure.
