Forty five year old Ricky Alderete was arrested in the theft of a bronze Jackie Robinson statue that was cut off at the ankles in McAdams Park, in Wichita, Kansas last month.
The fire department found the burned remnants of the statue five days later while crews were responding to a trash can fire at another park about 7 miles away.
It has yet to be released what led to his arrest, but police Chief Joe Sullivan said it was "only the first arrest" and there were more to come.
"When you try to take something from this community, it won't tolerate it," he added.
