Leland Makes Hall of Fame

Longtime manager Jim Leyland has been elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the contemporary baseball era committee. He received 15 of a possible 16 votes from the members considering managers.

Leyland managed the Pittsburgh Pirates, Florida Marlins, Colorado Rockies, and Detroit Tigers.

The bulk of his career was in Pittsburgh and Detroit where he won 700 games with both teams. He led the Pirates to three straight division titles from 1990-1992 and had six winning seasons, four playoff berths, and two American League pennants with Detroit.

His only World Series title was with the Miami Marlins in 1997.

Leyland became just the fourth manager elected into the Hall of Fame without having played in the majors (excluding Negro League managers) joining Joe McCarthy, Frank Selee, and Earl Weaver.

He is one of eight managers to win the Manager of the Year Award in both leagues. Twice with Pittsburgh and once with Detroit. He is also just the 10th manager to win pennants in both leagues.

He had 1,769 wins in 22 seasons ranking 18th all time in wins and 17th all time in games managed with 3,499. He is also tied for 7th in playoff wins with 44.
