The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced that Austin Matthews will be replacing John Tavares as the team captain.
Tavares was the captain for the last five seasons. He is also entering the final year of his 7 year deal.
Matthews was the first overall pick in the 2016 draft. He is entering the first year of his 4-year, $53 million contract extension. Matthews has also served as alternate captain for the last five years.
