The wildfires that blazed through the town of Lahaina, in Maui, Hawaii on August 8 have confirmed 115 people dead. The count is still expected to climb, as the search continues. So far 35 have been identified and their families have been notified. Authorities are seeking information and searching for roughly 388 missing people.
A list of first and last names of the unaccounted for compiled by the FBI was released in hopes it will aid officials in finding them. Police Chief John Pelletier said, “We’re releasing this list of names today because we know that it will help in the investigation. We also know that once those names come out, it can and will cause pain for folks whose loved ones are listed. This is not an easy thing to do, but we want to make sure that we are doing everything we can to make this investigation as complete and thorough as possible.”
Hawaiian Electric Company, along with three other related companies, are being sued by Maui County for their alleged failure to shut the power off, even though there had been repeated warnings of the possibility of the fires starting. The county feels this is negligence on their part and shutting off the power could have avoided the damage, which was caused by it being on.
