In response to the murder of 22-year-old nursing student, Laken Riley, by Jose Ibarra, an illegal Venezuelan migrant who had previously been arrested multiple times prior to Riley’s death, the Laken Riley Act was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate on Wednesday. The House vote was 263-156 and the Senate vote was 64-35.
Laken Riley’s young life was tragically taken on February 22, 2024 in Athens, Georgia while she was on a run on the University of Georgia’s campus grounds in the morning hours.
The Laken Riley Act would require ICE to arrest, detain and deport illegal immigrants who commit theft, burglary, larceny or shoplifting; allow states to sue the DHS for harm caused by illegal migration; and permits deportation of migrants who harm others or assault police.
This will be the first bill President Trump will sign into law.
