Updated: Nov 21, 2024

Illegal immigrant and Tren de Aragua gang member, Jose Ibarra has been found guilty on all 10 counts in an Athens, Georgia courtroom Wednesday for the merciless murder of 22-year-old nursing student, Laken Riley. Ibarra waived his right to a trial by jury and opted for a trial by judge.

Prosecutor Shelia Ross had “overwhelming and powerful” evidence, leading to the guilty verdict. In the opening line of her closing statement, Ross said to Judge Patrick Haggard, “ Your Honor, Laken Riley herself has given you all the evidence you need alone to find this man guilty of every single count in this indictment.”

Ross had multiple pieces of data, which consisted of physical, video and digital evidence all corroborating together that convicted Ibarra.

After only 19 minutes, after the prosecution and defense presented their closing arguments, Judge Haggard found Ibarra guilty of all 10 counts which includes Count 1, malice murder; Counts 2, 3 and 4, felony murder; Count 5, kidnapping with bodily injury; Count 6 aggravated assault with intent to rape; Count 7, aggravated battery; Count 8, obstruction or hindering a 911 call; Count 9, tampering with evidence; and Count 10, peeping tom.

Judge Haggard sentenced Ibarra to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
