Joey Chestnut Beats His Own Record

Joey Chestnut, competitive eater, once again, beat his own record and set the new world record in hotdog eating. For the first time in 15 years, Chestnut faced off against his rival Takeru Kobayashi in the Netflix Labor Day event in the HyperX Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

During Netflix’s “Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef” Chestnut was crowned champion when he devoured 83 hot dogs in 10 minutes, while Kobayashi was able to finish 66 hot dogs. The men had to follow new and different rules from the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest including, not being allowed to dunk the food in water or separate the hotdog from the bun.

After losing to Kobayashi six years in a row, Chestnut was finally able to break Kobayashi’s record in 2007 with 66 hot dogs and then was able to break his own record in 2021 with 76 hot dogs.

Chestnut’s prizes included $100,000, a hot dog shaped trophy and a championship title belt. He said he was “excited and nervous” to face Kobayashi. After winning Chestnut said, “I’ve been trying to hit 80 hot dogs for years and without Kobayashi, I was never able to do it… He drives me. We weren’t always nice to each other but I love the way we push each other to be our best.”

Kobayashi said, “I feel like I did everything I could do.”

If you missed the live broadcast, you can stream “Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef” on Netflix.
