Iowa 1st State to Remove Gender Identity Protections

Updated: Mar 3

Iowa is the first state in America to cut extra protections for transgender people. Governor Kim Reynolds signed “SF 418” into law to protect ‘girls’ sports and women’s private spaces such as locker rooms and bathrooms.’

Governor Reynolds said, “Today I am signing into law a bill that safeguards the rights of women and girls…Women and men are not identical; they possess unique biological differences. That’s not controversial, it’s common sense…It’s unfortunate that defining a woman in code has become necessary to protect spaces where women’s health, safety, and privacy are being threatened.”

“Sex…means the state of being either male or female as observed or clinically verified at birth…Gender, when used alone…shall not be considered a synonym or shorthand expression for gender identity,” Reynolds said.

After it was approved in the Iowa House and Senate, President Trump posted his support of the bill.

Reynolds also said the bill, “Is necessary to secure genuine, equal protection for women and girls… What this bill does accomplish is to strengthen protections for women and girls and I believe that it is the right thing to do.”

SF 418 will go into effect on July 1, 2025.
