ICE Arrests Brazilian Fugitive Convicted of Child Rape

Updated: Nov 28, 2023

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported last Monday they have arrested a Brazilian man, who was convicted of raping a 5-year-old child in Brazil and has been on the run since May 2019.

According to ICE’s Boston Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) team, they have arrested Saulo Cardoso Ferreira, 37 during a vehicle stop near his West Tisbury residence two week ago.

ICE said Cardoso Ferreira has been wanted by Brazilian law enforcements for failing to appear in court for his sentence in the Brazilian town of Sorriso and has failed to serve his 14-year prison sentence on the conviction of multiple charges for raping a child. A warrant for Cardoso Ferreira’s was issued in May 2019.

Cardoso Ferreira was unlawfully in the U.S. and it isn’t clear how he entered the country, according to ICE.

“This undocumented Brazilian national represented a significant threat to the inhabitants of Martha’s Vineyard,” ERO Boston Field Office director Todd Lyons said. “He sexually assaulted a five-year-old child in his homeland and then ran from authorities when held accountable for his actions.”

Ferreira will remain in ERO’s custody pending removal proceedings according to ICE.
