Hurricane Beryl Still Wreaking Havoc in the Caribbean

The earliest category 5 hurricane ever in the Atlantic and only the 2nd to reach the category 5 status in the month of July on record, is still wreaking havoc in the Caribbean. The death toll so far is at 6 people total.

Hurricane Beryl has now passed over the island nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines where it killed at least one person. The Prime Minister reported power and water is knocked out, about 90% of the homes are destroyed and wrecked some schools and hospitals.

Hurricane Beryl also passed over Barbados and the storm surge wrecked multiple fishing boats. The Prime Minister there reported nearly 20 vessels were sunk and the fishing industry is devastated. No deaths have been reported on this island thus far.

Beryl is making its way south of Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the Dominican Republic, and the mountainous terrains could cause mudslides. Beryl is also heading toward the south coast of Jamaica sometime mid-day/evening today. Although Beryl is weakening a little bit, it will still be a major hurricane as it gets to Jamaica.

Beryl is then predicted to go south of the Cayman Islands, then into the Yucatán Peninsula. After interacting with land, it should weaken more, possibly into a category 1 hurricane, or a tropical storm when it reaches Mexico or possibly south Texas next week.
