Hurricane Beryl Forcing Evacuees from Jamaica to Land in Florida

As Beryl makes its way toward Jamaica, hundreds of evacuees fled the country and have been landing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Beryl is forecasted to pass very close to, or over Jamaica today.


Beryl is now a category 4 hurricane sustaining winds of 140 mph and is projected to drop between 4 – 8 inches of rain, with some areas possibly reaching 12 inches in Jamaica, which could cause “life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides.” The coast of the country could have storm surge raise water levels by as much as 6 – 9 feet. 


Andrew Holness, Jamaica’s Prime Minister, declared all of the country a “disaster area” and issued an island wide curfew from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday.


At least 7 people have been reported dead so far due to the storm; 1 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, 3 in Grenada and 3 in Venezuela. Venezuela’s president is reporting 4 other people are still missing and over 8,000 homes have been impacted.
