The Texas Department of State health Services (DSHS) reported the first human case of novel avian influenza A (H5N1), “bird flu” in Texas. The last time a human was infected with the virus was in Colorado in 2022.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service reported Friday that cows in Texas, Kansas and Michigan have been sick from the virus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed a person had exposure to dairy cattle in Texas and has become infected with the virus. The patient’s only symptom was conjunctivitis (pink eye) and is recovering. The patient is being treated with an antiviral drug for flu and was told to isolate.
There doesn’t seem to be any threat to the general public of being contaminated with this virus. However, people who have close/prolonged interaction with infected animals or birds are at a greater risk of contracting the infection.
