On October 12, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the construction and administration of the first American Naval Force, the forerunner to the U.S. Navy.

The fleet began with only 2 ships and 160 sailors.

The Navy currently has over 340,000 active duty sailors, 71,000 reservists and nearly 300 ships.

John F. Kennedy was the first navy veteran elected as President. Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush were also navy veterans elected President.
