Governor DeSantis Signs On Line Protection for Minors Bill

This week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 3 (HB 3), which bans children under the age of 14 from obtaining a social media account and allows 14 and 15 year olds to become social media account holders, but will need to have parental consent. The bill protects the ability of Floridians to remain anonymous online, and also requires pornographic or sexually explicit websites to use age verification to prevent minors from accessing sites that are inappropriate for children.

DeSantis said, “Social media harms children in a variety of ways. HB 3 gives parents a greater ability to protect their children. Thank you to Speaker Renner for delivering this landmark legislation.” DeSantis said a driving force to sign the law was being a dad himself.

House Speaker Paul Renner said, “Thanks to Governor DeSantis’ signature, Florida leads the way in protecting children online as states across the country fight to address these dangers.”
