Who doesn’t love a delicious Girl Scout Cookie? Well a new lawsuit alleges that cookies being sold by the Girl Scouts include “dangerous” heavy metals and pesticides.
These popular cookies draw in hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue each year.
The lawsuit doesn’t claim anyone was harmed or sickened by the cookies but are requesting damages of at least $5 million for those who purchased the cookies in the U.S. , citing there’s a violation of consumer protection laws.
In December 2024 there was a study by GMO Science and Moms Across America that they tested 25 cookies sold in 3 states and found each contained the pesticide glyphosate, some having four heavy metals, including aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury.
The thin mints alone were found to have 334 times more glyphosate than recommended while 19 other cookies tested positive for cadmium levels that are exceeding limits set by EPA and the lawsuit alleges the EPA recommends limiting consuming glyphosate to about 1.75 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.
In the U.S. companies are required to meet the Food and Drug Administration and Environmental Protection Agency regulations on heavy metals in food. The FDA will work with manufacturers to “resolve the issue” and prevent products from being sold if they fail to meet those limits.
The youth organization has denied any of these claims.
