The manhunt for a fugitive and his accomplice continues after corrections officers were shot at in Boise, Idaho at about 2:15 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Gang member and white supremacist Skylar Meade, 31, was in prison serving a 20-year sentence for aggravated assault with a firearm enhancement on a law enforcement officer in 2017. Meade also had charges of grand theft and several drug related cases.
Meade is said to have staged the well-planned ambush when he severely injured himself in prison leaving the medical staff to determine he needed to be taken to the local hospital about a mile away. After receiving treatment in Saint Alphonsus Regional Hospital, officers were in the midst of transferring Meade back to prison from the Emergency Department’s carport when suspect Nicholas Umphenour fired at them leaving two officers shot; one with non-life threatening injuries and the other is in stable in critical condition. A third officer was hit in “friendly fire” and also sustained non-life threatening injuries. All three officers are expected to recover.
Meade and Umphenour fled the scene in a gray four-door Honda Civic sedan, with license plate number 2TDF43U.
Boise Chief of Police Ron Winegar said, “We believe that this was a coordinated attack, an ambush on the Department of Corrections Officers and certainly a planned endeavor to free him from custody. They are dangerous, they are armed and they have shown a propensity for violence.”
Meade is 5’6” and 150 lbs. with face tattoos with numbers 1 and 11 (standing for the 1st and 11th letters of the alphabet; A and K, which represents the Aryan Knights gang. Umphenour is a white male, 5’11” and 160 lbs.
Although police have received dozens of tips and possible sightings, no arrests have been made yet. Police are asking for any information to be called in to 911 immediately, and caution everyone to stay away, as they are armed and considered extremely dangerous.
