Prosecutors in the Dominican Republic formally charged Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco with sexually abusing a 14 year old girl.
According to prosecutors, Franco paid the girl's mother thousands of dollars to consent to the relationship, which lasted four months.
The girl's mother is also included in the indictment and is currently under house arrest. .
Franco has been on administrative leave since August 12th of 2023 and it runs through July 14th of this year under the agreement between Major League Baseball and the players' association. He has remained in the Dominican Republic while authorities investigate.
The Tampa Bay All-Star shortstop signed an 11 year, $182 million contract in November 2021.
Major League Baseball said in a statement...
"We are aware of the charges against Mr. Franco. Our investigation remains open, and we will continue to closely monitor the case as it moves forward."
