On Friday, former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez pleaded no contest to attempted murder and gun charges from a 2022 incident.
Velasquez struck the plea agreement with the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office in San Jose, California. With the deal, the premeditated murder charges will be dropped so he'll avoid the mandatory life sentence with the possibility of parole if a jury found him guilty.
Judge Arthur Bocanegra can now sentence Velasquez to anything from probation up to life in prison.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 18th. The actual sentencing date has yet to be set.
*** Velasquez was involved in a high-speed car chase and was repeatedly shooting at a vehicle that Harry Goularte was in back in February 2022. His mother owned a daycare that Velasquez's 4-year-old son was in. Goularte molested Cain's son. Velasquez was released on $1 million bail in November 2022. Goularte is facing ongoing charges of child molestation.
