Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter Dies at 96

Updated: Nov 28, 2023

Wife of former President Jimmy Carter, Eleanor Rosalynn Carter died Sunday in her home surrounded by family and friends at 96-years-old.

Rosalynn was diagnosed with dementia in May and joined her husband of 77 years in hospice care in their home in Georgia.

Rosalynn Carter was First Lady from 1977 to 1981 and was the first wife of a President to serve as an official envoy, taking diplomatic trips to South America and meeting with foreign leaders around the world. Her tenure as First Lady had changed the way all future First Ladies roles were perceived.

Jimmy Carter issued a statement, “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished… She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody love and supported me.”

Rosalynn’s life priority was destigmatizing mental illness and also worked with Habitat for Humanity.

President and Mrs. Biden released a statement, “Rosalynn did so much to address many of society’s greatest needs. She was a champion for equal rights and opportunities for women and girls: an advocate for mental health and wellness for every person.”

Her husband, their four children, and 22 grandchildren and great grandchildren survived Rosalynn Carter.
