Flooding and landslides have taken 224 lives in Kathmandu, Nepal (and the Himalayan region) after heavy rainfall fell. There are also158 injured so far.
Rescue efforts are still on going as dozens are still missing. Soldiers and police are helping with search and rescue. Heavy equipment is being used to clear the roads and only 9 of the 37 highways are opened for traffic. Other highways near rivers are expected to take longer to repair as they were washed away.
Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli said, “We were prepared for a disaster but could not predict it would be of this big scale.”
As weather is improving, rescue, recovery and repair efforts are ongoing.
