First Measles Death in Texas

The first death of the measles disease is being reported in West Texas. An unvaccinated, school aged child is said to have passed away after being hospitalized.

The outbreak has infected at least 124 people and most of them are children in the West Texas area.

Measles is one of the most contagious infectious diseases. A vaccine has been available since the 1960’s, is considered very effective, safe, and lowers the risk of infection. It is normally given as the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) combination. MMR is a two-dose vaccine with the first dose usually given between 12-15 months old and the second dose between 4-6 years old.

A death by measles hasn’t been reported in the U.S. since 2015.
